Spurs must finally cash in on 3/10 flop who’s earning more than Van de Ven

To avoid Tottenham stagnating, the audacious decision to sell this first-team player must be made this summer.

Tottenham Hotspur, who is now in fifth position in the Premier League and six points behind Aston Villa despite having two games remaining, is aware that their future depends on their ability to go on a winning streak in the last stretch of the league.

Since an explosive start to life under Ange Postecoglou back in the early going, the London club’s form has been disappointingly patchy; but, gains have been made this season, and this is potentially the beginning of a lucrative new era.

Whether Spurs qualify for Europe’s top competition or not, there have been exciting hints of what lies ahead. The £43 million acquisition of defender Micky van de Ven from Wolfsburg in the summer proved to be one of the campaign’s main drivers and is probably the key to future success.

The stats for Micky van de Ven’s season

Even though Van de Ven is only 22 years old, he has had a tremendous first year in England thanks to his performances, which have earned reputable journalist Henry Winter’s designation as one of “the buys of summer.”

The Dutchman has made 21 Premier League appearances thus far, according to Sofascore. In those games, he has scored twice, completed 95% of his passes, won 61% of his duels, and averaged 1.9 tackles, 2.7 clearances, and 5.7 ball recoveries per game.

With him and Cristian Romero anchoring the middle of defense, Tottenham will only get better. He’s the real deal.

But this season, he’s being let down since his backline role isn’t being adequately filled. Yves Bissouma needs to be sold this summer since he is beginning to show himself as a liability.

Why Spurs must cash in on Yves Bissouma

After being called a “monster” by journalist Aaron Stokes, Bissouma is struggling at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and can be held accountable for a few subpar games in the past several months.

He’s undoubtedly one of the best midfielders in Europe; according to FBref, he ranked in the top 1% for pass completion, the top 12% for progressive passes, the top 14% for successful take-ons, the top 5% for tackles, and the top 7% for interceptions per 90.

However, figures can be misleading, and the Mali international team is failing to mount a strong enough defense and attack.

Although he’s not the highest paid player at Tottenham, his £55k weekly compensation does exceed Van van Ven’s £50k weekly salary, therefore it could be wise to release him from his contract to make up for a better player.

As the graphic illustrates, Bissouma’s form has declined recently, his dominant play from the beginning of the campaign is long gone, and he is unable to hold his own in the engine room as Postecoglou’s team battles for Champions League qualifying.

His current market value of just £11 million, according to Football Transfers, reflects this. It is less than the costs of his teammates who are peripheral midfield players, such Oliver Skipp and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, and Tottenham may try to cash in this summer.

Even if it’s improbable that Daniel Levy would get back the same £35 million that was paid to recruit Bissouma from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2022—during Nuno Espirito Santo’s tenure—there’s a good probability Tottenham would look to add a new specialized No. 6 in the coming months.

If this takes place, Bissouma will become even more marginalized, and his value may decline even more. To keep the revival going under Postecoglou’s direction, he has to be sold.
