See what James Maddison said about Ange in Australia

James Maddison makes confident claim about Spurs future under Postecoglou

James Maddison has become the latest Tottenham player to insist that the side can achieve big things under Ange Postecoglou in the next couple of years.

Spurs had a poor end to the season, limping over the finishing line and failing to qualify for the Champions League.

However, the difficult finish has seemingly not dampened the optimism among the squad, many of whom believe that the side can achieve something special next season.

Earlier this week, Son Heung-min insisted that Tottenham will be better next season (ESPN) while Dejan Kulusevski remarked a couple of days ago that the Lilywhites will set their sights on major honours in the upcoming campaign (Daily Mail).

Maddison is similarly optimistic about what lies ahead under Ange, admitting that he has enjoyed working with the Australian so far.

Speaking after Tottenham’s post-season friendly against Newcastle United in Melbourne, the attacking midfielder spoke about the Spurs boss: “Yeah he’s quite popular isn’t he? Ange is a good man. He’s a great character. I love working for him and to see him in his country with the support he gets here was nice to see.

“The first season of any new project is always challenging. It has its ups and downs. I’m really enjoying working for him, genuinely, and I think we can achieve big things hopefully. So the first year of many I hope.”

Maddison opens up on post-season Australia friendly

The Tottenham star admitted that it was not easy to fly to the other corner of the world for a friendly just days after the end of the season but insisted he loved the reception that he and his teammates got Down Under.

When asked about the trip to Australia, Maddison responded: “It’s very tiring. It’s obviously a long, long flight to be here. We were in the air for longer than we were actually here for.

“Jet lag was kicking in this morning in the early hours when I was staring at the ceiling, but the reaction we got and the warm welcome makes the trip worth it.

“We’re very appreciative of the support we’ve got over here, especially with our gaffer being Australian. The warm welcome was fantastic and we’re very appreciative of that.”

The 27-year-old had a busy summer coming up, having been named in the England squad for the European Championship.

When asked about having to gear up for the tournament, he said: “It’s time to go back, a nice long flight, maybe have a glass of wine, couple of days off and then meet up with the international team.

“Hopefully try to recover and get my sleeping pattern back on normal English time and then go and train well and perform well in the friendlies and try to be on that plane.”

It is clear that despite the rough end to the season, the Tottenham squad are still fully bought into Postecoglou’s methods and believe that this approach will bring them success in the future, which is a testament to the conviction of the 58-year-old and his coaching staff.
