According to representatives of the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF), efforts are underway to gradually restore the water supply to Nasinu’s upper Khalsa areas.
For over a week, residents of upper Khalsa and the surrounding villages had been without water.
According to Peni Shute, acting manager of communications and stakeholder engagement, it always took several days to restore the supply to elevated locations.
“When the supply is restored in the affected areas, people rush to fill their household storage, which is causing the reservoir levels to continue to decline,” Mr. Shute stated.
According to him, WAF is still providing water carting services to the impacted areas.
“WAF is working on a project to boost treated water levels from the Viria Water Supply System into the existing water supply networks for the Greater Suva Area (GSA) for the elevated parts of Tamavua and along the Princes Rd area.”
According to Mr. Shute, water cuts started earlier last week as a result of the Tamavua Water Treatment Plant’s clarifier gearbox failing and heavy rain.
“The ongoing heavy rains, which raise turbidity levels and cause delays in water treatment and production, further impacted this.”
Meanwhile, Mr. Shute acknowledged that the water outage at Navua Hospital was caused by scheduled maintenance operations at the Nayagi Reservoir.
“A scheduled maintenance operation at Nayagi Reservoir necessitated a brief interruption of service from Wednesday at 5 p.m. to Thursday at 7 a.m.”
