Simmons explained his thinking on why he believes the Heat should go for Young.
Essentially, you convert them into Herro, Robinson, and a few other assets; if you’re Miami, you keep Butler. You got Heat Culture, Bam, and Trae—just the right kind of man, a warrior. Simply said, it would seem like the kind of transaction where I would say, “Oh man,” and then, after giving him more thought, say, “Oh [expletive], that might have been a good trade for them.” For some reason, I like him in Miami, I’m not sure why.”
Over the past two seasons, the Heat have been among the NBA’s least effective offensive teams. It has culminated in a Finals loss every time, thus they are unable to point to previous playoff success as a validated model for their strategies.
Miami persistently pursued a trade for Damian Lillard and eventually got Terry Rozier in February because they knew they needed a significant guard scorer. This season, Trae averaged 25.7 points and 10.8 assists.
He would completely change the offensive approach of the Heat, but he wouldn’t be able to work inside their system if he played defense like he does for the Hawks. Erik Spoelstra, the coach, would have a stylistic challenge, but if he could pull it off, Young is the best point guard currently on the market.
