BREAKING:Christian Horner issues Monaco GP plea after… read more

Red Bull Racing Team Principal Christian Horner has called for changes to the Monaco Grand Prix in the wake of continued criticism over the lack of racing action during the 2025 edition of the event. Horner believes that while the prestigious and historic Monaco circuit holds a special place in Formula 1, it must adapt to modern racing standards if it is to remain a compelling part of the F1 calendar.

The most recent Monaco GP once again showcased how difficult overtaking remains at the narrow street circuit, even with an experimental rule change. This year, Formula 1 introduced a mandatory two-stop pit strategy in hopes of creating more drama and positional changes. Despite this, the race played out in a familiar fashion, with most drivers finishing in the same positions they started due to the lack of overtaking opportunities.

Horner pointed out that while Monaco has a rich tradition and iconic status in the sport, it should not be immune to evolution. “Everything has to move with the times,” he stated, emphasizing that even a track as revered as Monaco must be open to updates. He noted that Monaco itself has changed over the decades, referencing the significant land reclamation efforts that have altered the layout of the city since the Grand Prix’s inception. Horner believes only a small adjustment might be needed to create at least one viable overtaking zone on the track, which would go a long way in improving the racing experience.

He went on to acknowledge that the current generation of Formula 1 cars—much wider than in previous eras—poses a significant challenge for a circuit as tight as Monaco. “These cars are just too big for this circuit,” Horner said. “You can barely get them side by side.” He conceded that while Monaco’s charm and legacy continue to make it an essential stop on the F1 calendar, the sporting aspect of the event leaves much to be desired.

Horner is not alone in his concerns. Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA) chairman Alex Wurz has proposed slight modifications to the circuit, aiming to enhance overtaking without drastically altering the character of the track. Horner did not detail which changes he would support but showed openness to discussions on circuit improvements.

Despite the challenges, Horner reiterated the allure of Monaco, emphasizing that the sport still values its prestige and glamour. However, he concluded with a clear message: prestige alone cannot justify poor racing, and the event must evolve if it wants to maintain its relevance in a sport that continues to grow and innovate.

Ultimately, Horner’s comments reflect a growing consensus in the paddock that while Monaco remains a crown jewel in terms of legacy and spectacle, changes—however modest—may be necessary to preserve its place in Formula 1’s future.
