The Gunners were long believed to be admirers of Sporting striker Viktor Gyökeres, but decided against a move in the summer due to the spiralling cost of a deal – but should they decide that the Swede is too expensive next year, they have a slightly cheaper alternative in mind, according to Caught Offside.
They claim that Arsenal have “identified” Atalanta and Italy forward Mateo Retegui as an alternative, with the 25-year-old, who has scored 11 goals in his first 12 league appearances for Atalanta, now emerging as a “plan B” for Mikel Arteta. Given that he only just signed from Genoa, he won’t come cheap – apparently a bid of €50m (£41.4m) would be needed to prise him away from his current club.
