Reece Walsh, a fullback for Brisbane, has committed to the team through the end of 2029 with a four-year contract extension.
Walsh’s contract was set to expire at the end of the following season. Although it was generally assumed that he would sign a new contract, Broncos management would have been growing increasingly uneasy every week.
For the team, which has had a difficult off-season thus far, this is some much-needed good news. They will be hoping it may usher in a prosperous period under new coach Michael Maguire.
Reece Walsh extends his contract by four years.
Walsh expressed his desire for on-field success at Red Hill after hearing the news of his new contract.
“It’s a special place here at the Broncos and I’m definitely happy to be staying here at the club with all my mates – it’s a good day,” Walsh stated.
Since I was a young child, I’ve dreamed to play for the Broncos, so I’m simply thrilled to be here and am eager to start preseason and Round 1.
“I want to work hard, succeed, and help this fantastic club win premierships, but first and foremost, I need to be a nice guy off the pitch, a loving father, a good role model, and I need to work hard on my football.
“I’ve had a few conversations with Madge and hard work is one thing he touches on a lot – I can’t wait to be around the boys again and get stuck into it together.”
The Brisbane Broncos and Reece Walsh had a challenging 2024 season.
Last year, the Broncos came within 15 minutes of winning the championship and breaking Penrith’s grasp on the league, but Nathan Cleary’s incredible spell tore the title from them.
Additionally, Kevin Walters’ team struggled to get into gear this season because to the heartbreaking grand final loss.
The Broncos only won two of their first five games of the season after losing to the Sydney Roosters in the historic season opening in Las Vegas.
Taylan May collided with Walsh in the first few minutes of their match at the base of the mountains, causing him to get a terrible facial injury in his team’s Round 3 defeat to Penrith.
With a terrible cut behind his eye, the No. 1 left to receive treatment from the club’s medical staff and hoped to return to the play.
However, because of the swelling on his face, he was eventually disqualified from the game due to impaired vision.
Walsh didn’t play again until Round 6, when he came back to help the Broncos defeat the Dolphins 28–14. With Walsh playing in the back, the team won three of their next four games.
However, due to injury and Origin scheduling, the fullback missed a crucial six weeks of the Broncos’ season after sustaining a concussion in the State of Origin opener against New South Wales.
Despite going on a run in which he scored five tries in four games, Walsh was unable to turn around the club’s fortunes when he did rejoin in Round 18.
When the Gold Coast Titans crushed them in Round 22, Brisbane’s season reached a depressing low point. Walsh came under fire for his on-field conduct during the 46-18 loss, which essentially put an end to their hopes of making the finals.
After the season, the drama persisted as coach Walters was fired in favour of Maguire, and the team is still dealing with the aftermath from Ezra Mam’s automobile accident.
