Cobbo or Kotoni Staggs’ time with the Broncos may be over as a result of the trade.
Selwyn Cobbo and Kotoni Staggs may suffer as a result of the Brisbane Broncos’ acquisition of Grant Anderson from the Melbourne Storm.
It is likely that one of Cobbo or Staggs will have to depart the Broncos when they signed Ben Hunt this week and added his contract to the high contracts of Reece Walsh, Payne Haas, and Ezra Mam.
Michael Maguire, the new coach, has stated that he believes the team can keep both centres inside the salary cap and wants them to stay. However, Anderson’s 2026 signing seems to be a backup plan.
Compared to Cobbo and Staggs, the 25-year-old is a far more affordable alternative and has scored 12 tries in 24 appearances with the Storm. The Broncos centres, who have represented Australia and State of Origin, would fetch high prices on the open market, with rival teams probably offering them up to $1 million annually.
Cobbo has reportedly had to reduce his asking price in order to remain with the Broncos, who have postponed contract negotiations until after the conclusion of the preseason.
However, Maguire is optimistic that neither Cobbo nor Staggs will have to depart.
“I would prefer to retain both of these players. The pay cap includes that, Maguire stated earlier this month. “I don’t have to sit down and go through that. Those two players are elite, but I’ll let the powers that be handle that portion.”

Despite Cobbo’s erratic play throughout his brief career, Maguire is sure he can bring out the best in the 22-year-old. “He is strong, and in my opinion I can really help him grow his game,” Maguire stated. Selwyn is a young woman. His skill at the Broncos is evident, and he has been destructive when playing for Queensland.
Personally, I believe I can support him in developing both as a player as a person. That’s what I like to do: help people improve. We are aware that there is some work to be done within these walls, but we will set out to do it.Every player has the potential to get better. Everybody will experience the highs and lows of a preseason.
Regarding Staggs, the new coach stated: “Kotoni has told me how much the Bronco means to him and he is certain that he wants to be a member. We want those players to stay here, stay with the Broncos, and continue to develop.”
Grant Anderson won’t be allowed to depart the Melbourne Storm early.
The Broncos are attempting to acquire Anderson from the Storm for 2025, according to News Corp. However, the Storm are reportedly playing hard ball and don’t want to release the young winger/centre too soon because he has a contract for next year.
Although Anderson has proven to be a competent first-grader, he has had difficulty finding playing time in Melbourne due to other players. Players like Nick Meaney, William Warbrick, Xavier Coates, and the up-and-coming Jack Howarth. He would undoubtedly be a valuable addition to Maguire’s roster at the Broncos, particularly if they are forced to let go of either Cobbo or Staggs.
