If the Yankees lose Soto, it sounds like they might try to add a great slugger.
Even though they are now regarded as one of the best teams in baseball, the New York Yankees will still need to make some difficult choices.
It’s likely that New York is content with its club at the moment, and rightly so. With a 23-13 record this season, the Yankees are seen as a potential contender for the World Series. The fact that they have achieved this feat without the services of teenage slugger Jasson Domínguez, D.J. LeMahieu, or Gerrit Cole makes it even more remarkable.
The Yankees should improve even further in the near future, yet despite their success, New York may lose its finest player in the upcoming offseason. Star slugger Juan Soto has been a revelation for New York, but when the season ends, he will become a free agency and there will probably be a lot of teams prepared to give him big money.
New York will make an effort to re-sign him, but there is no guarantee that he will return. However, it looks like the Yankees will try to make another major splash if Soto does decide to go. Pete Alonso, the great slugger for the New York Mets, has been mentioned by Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic as a potential alternative.
“Anything is possible in the unpredictable world of free agency,” Rosenthal stated. “Alonso might finish up joining the New York Yankees in place of Anthony Rizzo, while Soto might become a Met. Perhaps another team that has a first-base opening would see Alonso as the slugger they require, even if they would be committing to a player who could hit 500 home runs.”
Although Alonso has been floated as a potential by the Yankees before, Soto will surely be the team’s top priority. Right now, Soto is the overwhelming favorite to win the American League Most Valuable Player award since he has significantly improved New York’s offensive output.
While one can hope that Soto chooses to remain with the Yankees, it appears that New York will have backup plans.
