Whether Southampton advances this season or not, they are allegedly eager to lure Flynn Downes to St. Mary’s. Due to the success of the on-loan Hammer on the South Coast, manager Russell Martin has given club authorities the go-ahead to complete the transaction.
After manager David Moyes decided that Downes was surplus to requirements, the player was sent out on loan to Southampton. A player of Downes’ caliber would have been especially helpful to the team right now, considering Kalvin Phillips’ subpar play and Edson Alvarez’s ban.
The Saints might still challenge for a top-two berth if they have a great season finale, even if they have lagged behind in recent weeks.
Flynn Downes rejoined Martin at Southampton last summer after coming on loan from West Ham. The foundation for this reunion was laid by their previous partnership at Swansea City.
The midfielder has been in reasonable form this season and has established himself as a crucial member of The Saints team.
According to The Athletic, Southampton is keen to keep the 25-year-old on for the duration of the current campaign. While the loan arrangement with West Ham does not contain an option to buy, Southampton plans to start talking to West Ham about a permanent transfer after the season is over.
Hughie Southon, the founder of Claret & Hugh, was recently informed by a highly placed Hammers source that the team was accepting bids for Downes.
