Where Does Alabama Football Stand After Week 1 of Spring Practice? 7 Crimson Tide Takeaways

Alabama football has officially kicked off its spring practice under new head coach Kalen DeBoer, ushering in a fresh era following the departure of legendary coach Nick Saban. The Crimson Tide’s first week of practice has provided insight into the team’s early progress, position battles, and scheme adjustments.

Here are seven key takeaways from Week 1 of spring practice in Tuscaloosa.Kalen DeBoer ties Alabama record for wins by a first-year coach - TideIllustrated: Alabama Crimson Tide Football & Basketball Recruiting

    1. New Coaching Staff, New Energy

DeBoer and his new staff have brought a different vibe to Alabama’s practices. While the intensity remains high, there’s a noticeable shift in the approach to drills and team culture. Offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb, who worked with DeBoer at Washington, is already making his presence felt with an up-tempo offense.

    2. Jalen Milroe Embracing Leadership Role

Quarterback Jalen Milroe is taking on a bigger leadership role in his second year as the expected starter. He has shown improved decision-making and command of the offense, key traits needed in DeBoer’s system. His chemistry with returning and new playmakers will be critical moving forward.

    3. Adjustments to the Offensive Scheme

Alabama’s offense is transitioning from a more balanced attack under Tommy Rees to a pass-heavy, spread scheme under Grubb. Wide receivers are being asked to run more precise routes, and the tight ends are expected to be more involved in the passing game. How quickly the team adapts will determine early-season success.

    4. Defensive Line Looks Dominant

Despite losing some key players to the NFL Draft, the defensive line has been one of the strongest units so far. Jaheim Oatis and James Smith have been disruptive in drills, showcasing Alabama’s continued emphasis on defensive dominance. New defensive coordinator Kane Wommack’s aggressive approach appears to be resonating with the front seven.

    5. Freshmen Making an Early Impact

Several early enrollees have already turned heads, particularly on defense. Five-star cornerback Jaylen Mbakwe has flashed his athleticism, and linebacker Sterling Dixon has shown promise in a rotation that is still being sorted out. Their development will add much-needed depth to Alabama’s already talented roster.

    6. Competition at Running Back

With Jase McClellan and Roydell Williams moving on, the battle for RB1 is heating up. Jam Miller and Justice Haynes are getting first-team reps, but freshman Kevin Riley has impressed as well. This competition could extend deep into the summer.

    7. Special Teams Getting Attention

After inconsistency in the kicking game last season, Alabama is placing a greater emphasis on special teams. New special teams coordinator Jay Harbaugh is refining the kicking and return game, with multiple players competing for punt and kickoff return duties. Why Alabama chose Kalen DeBoer as its new head coach - ESPN

    Final Thoughts

It’s early in the spring process, but Alabama is showing promising signs under DeBoer’s leadership. While questions remain, especially on how quickly the team can adapt to new systems, the Crimson Tide are already laying the groundwork for another strong season. Expect more clarity in key position battles as spring practice progresses and the annual A-Day Game approaches.
