As everyone began to believe that JJ Redick was the obvious favorite to take over as head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, an unexpected development began to suggest that Dan Hurley of UConn was the real contender.

Hurley is now in charge because the Lakers will be playing the two-time NCAA Champion this weekend, and talks about a deal are already beginning to surface.

Lakers insider Anthony F. Irwin of Adacy’s says Los Angeles is ready to offer Hurley an eight-year deal at an estimated $100 million. Hurley would be among the top five NBA head coaches in terms of salary if he were to hit the $100 million mark.

Hurley, one of the best college basketball coaches in the country despite having never coached in the NBA, would be ranked behind only Steve Kerr, Gregg Popovich, Erik Spoelstra, and Monty Williams.

Nevertheless, the Lakers may feel compelled to make Hurley an irresistible offer to leave the Connecticut Huskies men’s basketball team behind after winning back-to-back titles. Hurley had an incredible 141-58 record during his six seasons at UConn, which includes four NCAA Tournament appearances in a row.

Hurley is expected to sign a deal with the Lakers this weekend, and the team’s ownership group seems willing to pay the price if it means making him an offer that will change his life.
