Jonathan Cooper experiences a mixture of feelings after landing a huge contract and losing his long-time friend Baron Browning to the Cards.

First, on the eve of a 41-10 thrashing by the Ravens, he inked a four-year, $60 million contract extension with the Denver Broncos at the team hotel in Baltimore.

His teammate for the previous four seasons in Denver and Ohio State, Baron Browning, was dealt to the Arizona Cardinals by the Broncos (5-4) on Monday, which caused him the most sorrow.

Cooper remarked on Wednesday, “Baron has been my guy, my teammate, for eight years.” “Seeing him leaving made me really sad and hurt. He has a good opportunity, though, and I have no doubt that he will seize it.

In 2021, Cooper and Browning were both selected by Denver. Following three cardiac ablation surgeries in May due to an anomaly in an EKG just before the draft, Browning was selected in the third round and Cooper in the seventh. That year, he missed the most of the offseason program.

Cooper has started every one of Denver’s 26 games in the past two seasons after playing as a spot starter for the previous two. He has recorded 14 sacks, 14 quarterback hits, 14 tackles for loss, and one interception.

Cooper has 20 tackles for loss, 38 quarterback hits, 183 tackles, and 18 1/2 sacks. Browning has 114 tackles, 22 quarterback hits, 15 tackles for loss, and 9 1/2 sacks over his career, while playing 13 fewer games than Cooper due to injury.

Cooper has been a vital part of the Broncos’ stingy defence, which has 31 sacks, second only to the New York Giants’ 35. In contrast, Browning missed a month of play due to a left foot ailment and had no sacks in five games.

Therefore, it was a simple decision for coach Sean Payton and general manager George Paton to decide who would be traded and who would receive an extension.

Regarding Cooper, Payton remarked, “I’m thrilled for him.” “He is competitive and tough. He’s a great teammate, in my opinion, and he definitely earned it.

“It’s never easy to trade someone, but I thought just in our visit, George and I and Baron sitting down, he totally understood,” Payton said in reference to saying goodbye to Browning.

He was eager to have more snaps, and it’s crucial for him to have more throughout the (contract) year.

Accordingly, Cooper will play his first game without his former pass-rush partner since his freshman year at Ohio State in 2016 when the Broncos visit Kansas City (8-0) on Sunday.

That season, one year before to Cooper’s arrival in Columbus, he redshirted.

Cooper remarked, “Baron is a fantastic football player, a great man, and we all know how talented he is.” “You are aware that I hope the best for my brother. I’m just eager to watch what he does because I spoke with him before I departed and I know he’s going to go there and have a ball.

Cooper stated that he was happy with the Broncos’ offer, even though he probably could have earned more money as a free agency following this season.

“I signed it there in the hotel, and it just worked out as well as it could have,” Cooper said. “The process went really smoothly, and I felt like I didn’t need to take it any further than what it was because I love this program, I love this team, and I love the organisation.”

“I’m still (upset) about the game,” he continued.

Cooper joins star cornerback Patrick Surtain II, who signed a new contract last summer, as the second Denver defence to sign an extension this season.

“I’m really pleased with Coop,” Surtain remarked. “He is the type of man that entered with the proper mindset, work ethic, and all the other components needed to succeed as a great player. It’s remarkable that he was able to get that contract despite being a seventh-round pick and moving through the roster.
