Vikings season 7 didn’t happen because the show’s creators and producers intended to conclude the series with season 6.
Show creator Michael Hirst, who wrote every episode, stated that he always planned for the series to end after six seasons, as it allowed for a complete story arc, primarily centered on the legendary Viking hero Ragnar Lothbrok and his sons.
The sixth season was split into two parts, with the final episodes bringing the stories of Ragnar’s sons to a close, exploring the end of the Viking Age and its impact on their legacy. Rather than prolong the storyline, Hirst felt it was better to end the show on a strong note, wrapping up major character arcs and historical narratives.
However, Vikings: Valhalla, a spin-off series set about 100 years after the events of Vikings, was developed as a new story following a fresh set of characters, like Leif Erikson and Freydís Eiríksdóttir, further exploring the legacy and influence of Norse culture and mythology. This spin-off is currently streaming on Netflix.
