The San Francisco 49ers are aiming to slam linebacker De’Vondre Campbell with a max suspension after he declined to enter the game on Thursday night.
The 49ers are opposed to Campbell’s release. In order to prevent Campbell from joining another team, the team is currently pursuing a maximum ban for him in coordination with the league administration.
After learning of Campbell’s refusal to play due to the mounting number of linebacker injuries, general manager John Lynch addressed him. According to Jay Glazer, the organisation is attempting to keep Campbell from being let go because they see him joining another team as a “reward” for his activities.
The 49ers will also be able to use some of Campbell’s signing bonus funds by requesting a suspension.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan stated, “You cannot harm your team or teammates and still be a member of our team by his actions during the game.” “We’re working through the semantics of (the process) but we’ll handle the situation accordingly.”
When Campbell learnt he was no longer in the starting lineup because of Dre Greenlaw’s eagerly anticipated comeback, he declined to play in the divisional game against the Rams.
In the fourth quarter, Campbell said he didn’t want to help his team and went to the locker room.
George Kittle stated after the game, “Look, if you’re on the roster, you’re expected to play.” “I believe that everyone in this building would sacrifice their life to enter that football pitch if they were asked to. Therefore, I am unable to comment on the strange things that people experience off the pitch. Whatever he decided, it wasn’t for this team or this organisation, and you know that’s his fault. I would have something to say about it, but I’m not really thrilled about it. On the pitch, I wish I had heard about it.
Is that why we lost, now? Not at all. When you’re suited up and someone doesn’t want to play football, it’s difficult to win games.”
The 49ers have had a challenging season in 2024, both on and off the pitch. Just a few weeks ago, Trent Williams’ wife gave birth to a stillborn child, but he is still making every effort to go back on the pitch. Charvarius Ward, who just joined the team, lost his one-year-old daughter earlier this season.
Meanwhile, Campbell’s refusing to play because he was irritated that he wasn’t in the starting lineup is an outrageous behaviour in view of what his teammates have been going through.
