Prior to joining Camp Nou, Szczesny played for Juventus for seven years. During his lengthy career, he also held positions at Arsenal, Brentford, and Roma. He won back-to-back FA Cups with Arsenal, but his time in North London was clouded by controversy when, on New Year’s Day in 2015, he was left off the squad for smoking in the showers following a 2-0 loss to Southampton. Szczesny has smoked throughout his career, despite being caught on camera doing it again later that year, and he maintains that it has no bearing on his performances.
Szczesny said, “Absolutely nothing,” in response to a question regarding his smoking habit posed by the Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo. I don’t alter these aspects of my personal life, and it doesn’t concern anyone if I smoke. I put in twice as much effort to demonstrate that I don’t think it has an impact on how well I play on the field.
