Novak Djokovic provides retirement update after losing Wimbledon final
Novak Djokovic has provided an update on his retirement from tennis after he lost the Wimbledon final to Carlos Alcaraz for the second straight year.
Djokovic was hoping to match Roger Federer’s record of eight Wimbledon titles but he was no way near his best level as he was beaten by Alcaraz in straight-sets.
It blocked Djokovic from a 25th Grand Slam singles trophy which would’ve moved him clear of Margaret Court’s 24 for the most in the entire history of the sport.
The Serbian, who faced booing from the crowds at this year’s Championships, has endured a tough season results-wise and hasn’t landed a single title in 2024 yet.
It’s a huge drop-off from 2023 which saw Djokovic win three of the four major tournaments and reach the final of the other in SW19.
The 37-year-old, though, has insisted that he has no plans to hang up his racket just yet and is fully committed to returning to play Wimbledon in 2025.
‘Yeah, let’s keep it going,’ Djokovic said when asked if he intended to play at the All England Club next year as he desperately tries to equal Federer’s record.
‘I still keep going. I would love to [play Wimbledon 2025]. I don’t have anything in my thoughts right now that this is my last Wimbledon.
‘I really want to play. I don’t have any limitations in my mind. I still want to keep going and play as long as I feel like I can play on this high level.’
Djokovic, who nearly missed Wimbledon this year after he required knee surgery following a nasty meniscus tear, will now turn his attentions towards the Olympics.
The Olympic tennis tournament gets underway on the Roland-Garros clay in Paris on July 27.
