Danny Murphy: Manchester United’s Problems Are About Players, Not Tactics
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Murphy argued that United’s issues go far beyond formations or game plans. “It’s not the system,” he said. “You can tweak shapes all you like, but if key players don’t track runners, make the right decisions, or show bravery on the ball, no formation will save you.”
Murphy highlighted lapses in concentration and a lack of on-field leadership as major factors behind the Red Devils’ inconsistent displays. He also questioned whether the club’s recruitment strategy matches the manager’s vision, pointing to gaps in midfield balance and defensive depth.
“Ten Hag has proved he can coach a side to play high-energy, disciplined football,” Murphy added. “But the players must execute it. Until United address that, the same problems will keep reappearing.”
With a demanding run of fixtures ahead, Murphy says the focus should be on the squad’s response—not another tactical overhaul.
