At the 2025 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, the Formula 1 development race has intensified as top teams including McLaren and Red Bull arrive in Imola with a host of performance-enhancing upgrades aimed at boosting their title prospects.
McLaren, fresh off a dominant win at the Miami Grand Prix, has introduced a comprehensive upgrade package to its already impressive MCL39. The updates are centered on enhancing aerodynamic efficiency. A key focus has been the rear of the car, where changes to the rear corner and suspension setup are expected to improve airflow conditioning and increase rear downforce. Additionally, the car now features a high-downforce rear wing and beam wing configuration. This setup is designed to create greater localized aerodynamic load, especially on the mainplane and flap, contributing to improved grip and handling. A minor update has also been made to the front suspension, enhancing reliability by improving the clearance between suspension components.
Red Bull, meanwhile, continues to evolve its RB21, following previous updates introduced in Saudi Arabia and Miami. The latest round of modifications targets localized aerodynamic efficiency. These include a redesigned radiator duct inlet and re-optimized geometry around the engine cover, aimed at better managing cooling and airflow. Additionally, Red Bull has refined the rear suspension fairing to enhance the aerodynamic shape toward the inboard area. A revised wheel bodywork design and updated exit ducts at the rear corners are expected to clean up airflow fields and improve overall aerodynamic balance.
Mercedes has not been left out of the upgrade arms race. The team has brought updates to the front suspension, front wing, and engine cover. The front suspension fairings have been reprofiled to enhance aerodynamic stability and direct better airflow to the car’s rear, thus increasing floor loading. On the front wing, a reshaped element has altered the upwash field, aiding rearward airflow management. The engine cover has also been redesigned, primarily for improved engine cooling and to facilitate more efficient airflow to the rear wing.
Ferrari has made subtle modifications, particularly to the rear corners, where redesigned scoop geometries are aimed at enhancing airflow and generating more localized aerodynamic load. These adjustments are also intended to better handle low grip conditions, though the team has stated this setup is not their first choice.
Aston Martin has introduced the most extensive upgrade package, including modifications to the halo, floor body, fences, diffuser, engine cover, and beam wing. The updates are designed to work cohesively, delivering better aerodynamic balance, increased airflow efficiency, and reduced drag.
Alpine’s updates consist of a reprofiled front wing and flap to more effectively distribute aerodynamic load, as well as a revised rear bodywork panel to improve rear airflow.
Haas has also brought significant changes, including a new floor body design to boost rear airflow and energy extraction. The floor edge has been slimmed down, and a redesigned diffuser has been introduced. Updates to the rear brake ducts and suspension fairings aim to enhance load extraction and better manage tire wake.
Only Sauber and Williams have opted not to bring any major upgrades requiring official declaration for the Imola race weekend.
