Wells Surgeries Excluded as Street and Glastonbury Secure NHS GP Upgrade Funding

GP surgeries in Wells have been overlooked in a significant new NHS funding initiative aimed at modernising facilities and improving patient access, while practices in Street and Glastonbury are among those in Somerset set to benefit.

The UK Government, through the Department for Health and Social Care, has announced a £102 million investment in GP practices across the country. This funding will support over 1,000 surgeries in upgrading infrastructure, creating more consultation spaces, and enhancing access to appointments. In Somerset, 16 GP practices have been chosen to receive a share of this funding, including Vine Surgery in Street and Glastonbury Surgery. However, Wells has not been included among the selected practices.

The funding is part of the Labour government’s broader ten-year strategy to strengthen primary care services and alleviate pressure on hospitals. By investing in physical improvements to GP surgeries, the government aims to provide better care within communities and reduce the strain on emergency and secondary care services.

The NHS Somerset Integrated Care Board (ICB), which played a role in securing the regional allocations, has yet to provide a detailed breakdown of how much funding each practice will receive. It also did not clarify the criteria used to determine which practices were included and why locations like Wells were left out. Shepton Mallet, another town in the area, also failed to secure funding in this round.

Health Secretary Wes Streeting MP highlighted the urgency of the investment, stating that minor upgrades to GP surgeries had been neglected for too long, contributing to longer waiting times and limiting the capacity of doctors to treat patients effectively. He emphasized that these building upgrades—although straightforward—are essential to improving healthcare access.

The improvements funded through this programme will focus solely on physical infrastructure. This includes constructing additional consultation rooms and updating outdated interior spaces. However, operational costs and staffing will remain the responsibility of each individual GP practice, as the funding does not extend to cover salaries or ongoing service delivery costs.

Dr Amanda Doyle, National Director for Primary Care and Community Services, underscored the importance of ensuring GP premises across England meet consistent standards. She stated that improved buildings would not only enhance the patient experience but also provide a more suitable and efficient working environment for healthcare professionals.

The announcement follows a recent review conducted by Lord Ara Darzi, which concluded that many surgeries in England are working from outdated and unsuitable buildings. These physical constraints, according to the report, are hindering efforts to deliver modern, high-quality care at the community level.

While the upgrades are expected to commence later in the year for the successful practices, the exclusion of Wells has raised questions about regional allocation and the future of GP services in the city.
