Mick Schumacher’s prospects of returning to Formula 1 appear to be gaining momentum as he has emerged as a serious contender for one of the available seats at the new Cadillac Formula 1 team, which is set to debut in 2026. Cadillac, a division of General Motors, will be present at the Miami Grand Prix this weekend, where key discussions about their entry into the sport and potential driver lineup are expected to take place.
Although Schumacher himself will not be attending the Miami talks, sources indicate that he is firmly in the running for one of the two seats Cadillac will offer. Schumacher, the son of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher, has been out of Formula 1 racing since 2022 after losing his seat at Haas. Despite this, he continues to hold a test and reserve driver role with Mercedes and has remained connected to the paddock.
His bid to return to racing has gained the support of respected figures in the sport, including former AlphaTauri team principal Franz Tost. Tost recently expressed his backing for Schumacher, telling Sport1, “I hope it’s not too late for Mick. In Formula 1, you’re quickly forgotten if you’re away for too long. But Mick still has what it takes. With the right preparation, he would be a good choice for Cadillac.”
While Schumacher is being seriously considered, he is not the only name linked to Cadillac’s driver roster. Former Red Bull driver Sergio Perez is also rumored to be under consideration. Although not confirmed, Perez is expected to attend the Miami Grand Prix, where he could take part in Cadillac-related discussions.
Perez ended his Formula 1 career at the conclusion of the 2024 season following a decline in form during his final year with Red Bull Racing. Nevertheless, the Mexican veteran remains an attractive candidate for any new team, boasting six career victories and significant commercial appeal. He continues to be backed by major sponsors such as Kit Kat and Heineken, maintaining a visible presence on social media even after stepping away from the grid.
Despite Perez’s strong resume and financial backing, Cadillac is not ruling out giving one of its seats to a younger talent. This is where Schumacher, still only in his mid-20s, may find a valuable opportunity. Having prior F1 experience, combined with his youth and ongoing development work with Mercedes, makes him a compelling option for the team’s long-term plans.
However, Schumacher will face tough competition. American driver Colton Herta is another candidate reportedly on Cadillac’s shortlist. Herta has long been linked with a move to Formula 1, and a U.S.-based team like Cadillac would be a fitting match. Additionally, promising drivers from the 2025 Formula 2 grid are also being closely monitored, further intensifying the competition for a coveted seat.
With Cadillac’s F1 preparations accelerating, the next few months could be decisive for Schumacher’s racing future, as the team weighs its options for the 2026 season.
