Following an intense stretch of five races in six weeks, including a grueling triple-header across Japan, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia, the young Italian returned to Mercedes’ Brackley headquarters to assess his progress.
Antonelli, who has scored 38 points from the opening five rounds, currently sits ahead of seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton in the standings. The 18-year-old has already etched his name in the record books by becoming the youngest driver to lead a race and set the fastest lap during the Japanese Grand Prix—historic feats that have drawn praise across the paddock.
Speaking ahead of the Miami Grand Prix, Antonelli shared that he used the off-week not only to recharge mentally but also to dive deep into data with the Mercedes engineering team. He spent several days at the factory examining footage and telemetry from previous races, aiming to extract lessons from both his successes and mistakes.
“Having a week off was really, really good because we had a pretty intense run of races,” Antonelli said during a media session. “It gave me time to rest mentally and also re-watch and analyze everything. When you have back-to-back races, you don’t really get the time to process what happened or apply what you’ve learned.”
Antonelli explained that this reflection period was crucial for his development. It allowed him to identify areas where he performed well and those where improvements were needed. This analysis, he said, was essential in preparing for the upcoming races, including the Miami Grand Prix, set for May 4.
Despite balancing a demanding racing schedule, Antonelli is also preparing for his final school exams. Yet, he embraced the additional “homework” from Mercedes, eager to improve his understanding of car performance and race strategy.
“It was a really productive week,” he added. “Spending time at the factory helped me mentally and technically. It was also great to spend some days at home, disconnect a bit, and come back fresh and focused.”
As Antonelli heads into the Miami weekend, his commitment to both education and performance in F1 reflects a mature approach uncommon for a driver of his age. With a strong start behind him and momentum on his side, the young Mercedes driver continues to impress fans and experts alike with his rapid rise in the sport.
