FIA Clears McLaren After Brake Inspection Following… Read more

Following the Miami Grand Prix, the FIA has officially deemed McLaren’s rear brake system legal, putting an end to the growing speculation regarding the team’s methods of managing rear tyre temperatures.

Concerns had been raised by several rival teams over McLaren’s brake design, particularly focusing on the way it was seemingly cooling the outer surface of its rear brake drums. These suspicions were rooted in a belief that McLaren may have been exploiting a technical grey area to manage tyre temperatures more effectively — a crucial factor in race performance.

According to a report by The Race, Red Bull is believed to have played a key role in escalating the issue by presenting the FIA with thermal imagery allegedly sourced from a third party. These images reportedly showed unusual cold spots on McLaren’s rear brake drums, prompting questions about the legality of their cooling system.

In response, the FIA launched a comprehensive investigation into McLaren’s MCL39, conducting a detailed examination of the braking system, including the rear brake ducts and drums. This inspection took place after the Miami Grand Prix at the Miami International Autodrome and was aimed at uncovering any hidden mechanisms or irregularities that might offer an unfair advantage.

Despite the intrigue and detailed scrutiny, the FIA found no evidence of wrongdoing. The investigation concluded that McLaren’s rear brake design fully complies with the current regulations. While rivals struggled to understand how the Woking-based team achieved such efficient cooling, the governing body confirmed that no illegal components or systems were discovered.

Though the outcome of the inspection has been communicated informally, the FIA has not yet released an official document outlining its findings. It is expected that this documentation could be made public before the upcoming Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

This resolution provides McLaren with clarity and a clean slate going into the next phase of the season. With the controversy now settled, the team can focus on performance without the shadow of regulatory uncertainty. Meanwhile, rivals will likely revisit their own brake and tyre strategies in light of McLaren’s innovative — but legal — approach.

The case also underlines the increasing use of data analytics and third-party imaging in modern Formula 1, where every detail is scrutinized for competitive edge. For now, McLaren’s approach stands as a technically legal solution that has passed the sport’s highest level of inspection.
