Speaking at the UK Local Medical Committees (LMC) Conference in Glasgow, BMA GP Committee Chair Dr. Katie Bramall-Stainer presented the report and strongly endorsed its findings. She stated that the document provides a clear, evidence-based economic argument in favor of funding general practice appropriately. According to her, any past claims of ignorance about the state of general practice can no longer be justified in light of the compelling data presented in the report.
The conference delegates unanimously supported a motion calling for a coordinated campaign across all four nations of the UK to highlight the increasingly fragile state of general practice. Dr. Bramall-Stainer confirmed this campaign would move forward, reinforcing the urgency of addressing current issues in the sector.
Dr. Bramall-Stainer also emphasized that although revitalizing general practice will demand significant resources and staffing, it is still a cost-effective solution compared to broader NHS spending. She called on the Treasury to seize this opportunity, especially with a general election likely within the next three years, to support adaptable and innovative GP contractors who are best positioned to drive meaningful change. This four-nation campaign, built on the back of the new report, aims to stress just how vital and economically sound it is to support GPs in the UK.
