Five Suspects Arrested in Benue on Charges of Identity Theft and Cyberfraud
Five young guys have been arrested by the Benue State Police Command on suspicion of identity theft and cybercrime.
The arrests followed an operation by the Cybercrime and Narcotics Department, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Sewuese Anene, said in a statement.
The suspects, who were between the ages of 18 and 21, were apprehended during a raid on their Makurdi hideout, according to SP Anene.
Police had obtained intelligence that suggested they were involved in fraudulent activities. Three iPhones, a Tecno phone, and two more cellphones were among the gadgets seized as a result of the investigation.
According to investigations, the suspects stole assets under false pretences and tricked and defrauded innocent individuals by posing as others.
Chief of Police Steve Yabanet advised locals to remain vigilant due to the increasing risk of cybercrime. The Command’s commitment to combating illicit activity in the state was again reiterated by him.
After the inquiry is over, the culprits will be prosecuted, Commissioner Yabanet said, warning those engaged in cyber fraud to cease.
