Ange Postecoglou’s brutal chat with Hugo Lloris that ended Tottenham career

Ange Postecoglou, the manager of Tottenham and an ITV analyst, promptly fired his captain, Hugo Lloris.

Ange Postecoglou has been a popular figure at Tottenham and on ITV. During the Euros, he won fans over with his passion for football and depth of knowledge about the sport. In his first season leading Spurs, he finished the Premier League in fifth place.

He hasn’t shied away from taking risks, either, even if they mean upsetting the dressing room. Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario was one of his first purchases in north London, even if captain Hugo Lloris was already there after a very successful ten years in the net.

However, Vicario replaced the seasoned goalie, and Lloris was benched for the first half of the season until his contract was voided and he was free to sign with Los Angeles FC, an MLS team.

Since then, Lloris has opened up about his last few months at Spurs and the talk he had with Postecoglou, which essentially put an end to his tenure at the team and made him “transparent.”

Lloris told Le Parisien that there were a number of contributing causes, including the team’s poor performance and the coach’s (Antonio Conte) mounting pressure and lack of patience. As a result, there was a bad group dynamic.

Both Tottenham and I were nearing the end of a certain cycle. I was aware that Tottenham, particularly those in my position, preferred to sign younger players. The summer was coming, and I was left out of the schedule.

“The coach [Postecoglou] told me that I would just be a training player and that I would no longer be going on the pitch when the competition returned in August 2023. I was ignored; I had turned transparent.”

After leaving the game at St. James’ Park after just nine minutes, Lloris played his final game for Spurs in a 6-1 hammering against Newcastle in April 2023. He stayed with the team for eight more “complicated” months before finalizing his move to the United States.

“Those eight months without playing were complicated,” he added. “Since I’ve been playing football – and I started at the age of six – I’ve been thinking about the upcoming match, planning for the next goal.
