I’m Confident: Barry Bannan admits ‘One big player’ will sign new Sheffield Wednesday contract

Sheffield Wednesday has had an incredible summer thus far. Following their escape from relegation, the Owls signed Danny Rohl, Barry Bannan, and Liam Palmer to new contracts.

They also signed Ben Hamer, Yan Valery, Max Lowe, and Svante Ingelsson; Jamal Lowe is expected to sign on a free transfer.

Although the Owls are doing a fantastic job of bolstering their roster, they also have the task of holding onto some of their players who are no longer under contract.

Wednesday is still in talks with Josh Windass, Dominic Iorfa, and Di’Shon Bernard, though there has been little progress on the latter two.

It appears a deal is back on and “good progress” is being made in negotiations. Bannan says it is “important” to keep hold of Josh Windass.

It’s unclear when the saga will come to an end and whether it will be positive news at the end of it, but Bannan seems to think so.

Speaking to The Star at Owls in the Park, the captain said: “It is unfortunate that windass’ contract situation has dragged on so long.

He’s a major talent, and it would cost some money to bring in a guy of his caliber. Because I’m his best friend, I’ve always had faith that he’ll sign here. I’ve always said Josh will stay here, but I do know what he’s like and I have a vague idea of the discussions.

He is adored here; perhaps he is someone some people love to detest! He loves Sheffield and the supporters love him back. As a player and friend, I’m hopeful he signs. You never really know what’s going on behind the scenes, but maybe they’ll work things out for Josh, the club, and me. Seeing him play would be great.

Sheffield Wednesday need to get a deal done

If Bannan hadn’t known that the two sides were on the verge of reaching an agreement, he most certainly wouldn’t have been so complimentary of Windass’ scenario.

If he does ultimately decide to stay longer at Hillsborough, everyone will be greatly relieved, even though it is unclear what the hold-up is.

While Rohl is keen to add his own players, he already has a very small pool of midfielders at his disposal. Windass is a vital member of this team and will surely play a major role again next season.
