Wes Burns, a winger for Ipswich Town, has withdrawn from Wales’ squad due to a hamstring injury ahead of their play-off match against Finland for Euro 2024 on Thursday.
In Town’s 6-0 thumping of Sheffield Wednesday at Portman Road on Saturday, the 29-year-old was substituted in the 38th minute after he assisted Omari Hutchinson’s goal that ended the match’s tie 15 minutes in.
After the Blues’ 24th victory of the season, manager Kieran McKenna stated: “It looks like a hamstring. It doesn’t look good.” It doesn’t seem minor, and neither do I think it feels minor.That is unquestionably the low point, but we will examine it and make an assessment over the course of the following few days.
In the dressing room, everyone is heartbroken for Wes, and we’re just crossing our fingers that the severity isn’t as high as it could be.
Burns would have hoped to team up with Rob Pages’ group, which also includes Nathan Broadhead and Kieffer Moore from Town, as Wales attempts to go past Finland in Cardiff and set up a meeting with either Poland or Estonia five days later for a position in this summer’s European Championship.
Cameron Burgess, meantime, has been added to Australia’s team for their forthcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifying match against Lebanon. The games are scheduled for Tuesday and tomorrow.
Additionally, for Ecuador’s friendlies against Guatemala on Friday and Italy on Sunday, Jeremy Sarmiento has been called up to the team.
