The NFL is thinking about implementing the distinctive kickoff used in the XFL. It won’t be used by the UFL, which is a combination of the XFL and USFL.
The UFL released the regulations governing the joint venture on Tuesday. Play for the partnership begins on March 30. The kickoff will resemble the customary NFL/college kickoff when the league officially gets underway, with one significant exception: it will take place from the 20.
As of right now, the NFL kicks from the 35. The 25 will receive all UFL touchbacks.
With 10 players from the kicking team at the receiving team’s 35 and 10 players from the receiving team on their 30-yard line, five yards apart, the XFL kicked off from the 20. It had the appearance of an electric football game before the switch was switched on, with the 20 players on the 35 and the 30 standing still till the kick was caught.
It will be fascinating to watch if the NFL continues to research it and whether the NFL eventually adopts it now that the joint XFL/USFL has dropped the XFL kickoff.
