Walker, projected by Michigan this spring to be a breakout player this fall, dealt with injuries and struggled to make a dent in the Wolverines’ cornerback room.
As the nation saw its Transfer Portal setbacks in December, the athletes of the Michigan football team remained steadfast in their pursuit of helping the Wolverines win a national championship. Players like Jake Thaw and Darrius Clemons have chosen to use the Transfer Portal in order to spend the upcoming season at a different program because Michigan has taken that action.
Amorion Walker, a 6-foot-3, 180-pound redshirt freshman cornerback, arrived at the entrance on Thursday night. While accessing the gateway does not exclude a player from continuing with their present program, it does imply that they have decided to spend the upcoming season somewhere else.
Walker struggled to make an impact in the Wolverines’ cornerback room and fought with injuries. This spring, Walker was predicted by Michigan to be a breakout player this fall. He played 66 snaps, all defense, in six of Michigan’s fifteen games. In coverage, he gave up three catches on six targets and one pass breakup. He did not participate in either of Michigan’s College Football Playoff games and ended with three tackles.
He played the seventh-most snaps overall this season among Michigan’s cornerbacks, trailing just 6-foot-3 true freshman DJ Waller Jr.
Walker’s 2023 was clouded by injuries and buried on the depth chart after Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh praised his shiftiness in February—his 6.10-second 3-cone exercise would be faster than any previous time in NFL Combine history. Walker had previously played wide receiver but had shifted to cornerback. Nonetheless, he appeared to be handling it well when he spoke with 247Sports last week.
For me, it’s been beneficial, Walker said to The Michigan Insider. It’s been really helpful in my mental development. Adversity and a little bit are experienced by everyone, so I’ve been fighting to get back to where I need to be.
“It is undoubtedly very helpful. My injury made it possible for me to sit down and concentrate on all the aspects of the game at once. That was also really beneficial to me. I think my football playing acumen has improved significantly since the start of the season.
Walker even expressed interest in being a starter the next season, claiming to weigh up to 192 pounds.
Walker responded, “Yeah, absolutely (that’s what I’m looking to do)”. “I think I’m smarter and more polished. For me, it will be a very significant off-season.It appears like he could be pursuing a starting position at a different program.
