The Toffees are aiming to boost David Moyes’ attacking options next year and have reportedly identified Maeda among their potential targets amid concerns over Beto and Thierno Barry’s performances early in the season.
While Barry, a £27m summer signing from Villarreal, has yet to find the net in six Premier League appearances, Beto has scored just once – in the 3-2 win at Wolves.
Although Jack Grealish’s performances have been a rare bright spot for the Toffees, new arrivals in attack have not been ruled out in 2026, with Maeda among those being considered.
Everton Eyeing Move for Daizen Maeda
According to O’Rourke, Maeda would be tempted by the prospect of taking his talents to the Premier League after being unsettled by interest in the summer.
While Celtic are reluctant to part ways with last season’s top scorer in January, they could be in a weaker negotiating position after the campaign, as Maeda will have only 12 months left on his contract.
Maeda, praised as ‘world-class’, initially joined Celtic on loan from Japanese side Yokohama F. Marinos in January 2022 before his move was made permanent the following summer.
The 27-year-old made his 170th appearance for Celtic in their 2-0 loss to Braga in the Europa League on Thursday, which extended the Hoops’ winless run to three matches.
Celtic had secured back-to-back draws prior to that – a 1-1 with Red Star Belgrade in the Europa League and a 0-0 with Hibernian in the Premiership last weekend.
Maeda has registered two goals and two assists in 12 appearances for Brendan Rodgers’ side this season and has so far struggled to replicate his impressive form from the 2024/25 campaign.
The Japan international scored 33 goals and provided 12 assists in 51 appearances last term, helping Celtic secure a league and league cup double.
