Siya Kolisi Faces an Uncertain Future – Is This the Final Chapter with the Springboks?

    June 25, 2025

South African rugby finds itself at a turning point. Siya Kolisi, who captained the Springboks to World Cup glory and became a symbol of hope and unity, may be nearing the conclusion of his illustrious international career after almost a decade at the top.

Sources close to the national team suggest Kolisi could miss the rest of the 2025 season due to a combination of injuries and declining form. As South Africa begins to transition following consecutive World Cup triumphs in 2019 and 2023, many are beginning to wonder: could this also be the end of Kolisi’s tenure in the green and gold?

Battling Injuries and Balancing Club Demands

Since joining Racing 92 after the last World Cup, Kolisi has had to adapt to the demands of European rugby. Though still a respected presence in the Top 14, the relentless schedule has taken its toll. A series of minor injuries — including a recent muscle setback — have disrupted his availability for the Springboks, ruling him out of key fixtures such as the Rugby Championship and the upcoming northern hemisphere tour.

Meanwhile, a new wave of dynamic back-row talent — including Evan Roos, Elrigh Louw, and Phepsi Buthelezi — is beginning to make a strong case for permanent selection. This puts head coach Rassie Erasmus in a difficult position: should he continue relying on the veteran leader, or is it time to fully embrace the next generation?

    More Than Just a Player

Kolisi’s contribution to the game goes far beyond the pitch. As South Africa’s first Black captain to lift the Webb Ellis Cup, his legacy as a unifying force during politically charged times is firmly cemented. His heartfelt words after the 2019 World Cup touched millions and have come to define a new era in South African sport.

Yet, elite sport often demands hard choices. As the Springboks set their sights on the 2027 World Cup in Australia, there is growing sentiment that the time has come to cultivate a new leadership core, potentially under younger stars like Damian Willemse or Jasper Wiese.

    A Graceful Exit?

Unlike many legends who receive a grand sendoff, Kolisi may be approaching the end without fanfare. He has yet to make any official announcement about retirement, and in recent interviews, he’s expressed a willingness to contribute however he can. At the same time, he has acknowledged that “the jersey belongs to the people,” hinting at his recognition of the changing landscape.

    Legacy Beyond the Game

Should this truly mark the end of Kolisi’s Springbok career, it would signal the close of a remarkable chapter in South African rugby history. With two World Cups, a Lions series win, and a reputation for inspirational leadership, Kolisi’s influence has extended far beyond the scoreboard.

As he looks to the future, he may turn to coaching, community work, or mentoring the next generation of players. Regardless of what comes next, the world will be watching how both Kolisi and the Springboks navigate this transition.

Even if he never pulls on the green jersey again, Siya Kolisi’s legacy — built on courage, humility, and unity — is already immortal. Whether this is farewell or simply a pause, one truth remains: Siya Kolisi’s name is already etched in rugby history.
