At the 2025 Miami Grand Prix, the excitement began even before the real racing got underway, thanks to a playful LEGO stunt involving full-sized, drivable LEGO replicas of Formula 1 cars. The unique event saw F1 stars like George Russell, Lando Norris, Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc, and Pierre Gasly take to the Miami International Autodrome in cars made from over 400,000 LEGO bricks. Built by a team of 26 LEGO experts over a combined 22,000 hours, these detailed models included everything from sponsor logos to Pirelli tyres, and could reach speeds of up to 20 km/h.
Despite their limited speed, the LEGO vehicles weren’t immune to some classic F1-style drama. Several of the drivers collided during the light-hearted race, with Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc receiving a bump from Gasly’s Alpine. Hamilton joked about the “dirty driving” behind him, while another incident involved George Russell and Lando Norris coming together in a mini-crash.
Following the LEGO fun, the real Grand Prix began, and McLaren enjoyed a sensational outing. Oscar Piastri clinched victory, followed closely by teammate Lando Norris, marking a dominant one-two finish for the Woking-based team. Mercedes driver George Russell completed the podium in third, making his fourth top-three finish of the season.
Speaking after the race, Russell playfully referenced the earlier LEGO crash, joking that he had “injured” Norris during the morning’s antics. With a smile, he said, “I think Lando was a bit upset with me because we had a bit of a crash on the LEGO race this morning. I gave him a bit of an injured leg. So I don’t know if he’s going to complain at me for something.”
Despite the joking tone, there were no hard feelings, and Russell went on to express his satisfaction with the result, particularly considering the challenges he faced during the weekend. “To be honest, really happy to come away with P3, because I’ve been struggling this weekend personally and always on the back foot,” he admitted. “But ultimately, when it mattered, got a really good result today. But well done to the McLarens. They’re just down the road.”
A timely Virtual Safety Car helped Russell jump ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen during pit stops, which proved critical to securing his podium finish. The final gap between the two was just over two seconds, and Russell remarked that he felt in control despite the pressure from the reigning World Champion. “It’s not easy to keep Max behind, but I felt really good within the car,” he said.
