Breaking: Fernando Alonso disagrees with Lewis Hamilton and makes … Read more

Fernando Alonso has made it unmistakably clear that he has no ambitions of racing into his 50s, distancing himself from the views of fellow veteran Lewis Hamilton. The 43-year-old Spaniard, who boasts two world championships and over two decades of experience in Formula 1, has emphasized that he will not continue competing if he no longer feels fast or motivated — and certainly not into his sixth decade of life.

The contrast in perspectives between the sport’s elder statesmen became apparent following Hamilton’s comments in 2023. At the time, the seven-time world champion, now aged 40, stated that he wouldn’t rule out racing well into his 50s. Hamilton had remarked, “never say never,” when asked about the longevity of his F1 career, even suggesting that both he and Alonso might still be on the grid a decade from now.

Alonso, however, has now drawn a clear line in the sand. Speaking in a recent interview with Formula1.com, the Aston Martin driver stated bluntly: “I don’t see myself [competing in F1] at 50.” He explained that his future in the sport hinges on two key factors — his performance and the needs of the team. “I will drive as long as I feel fast and competitive and the team needs me at the wheel,” he said. “That’s why we left things open.”

Despite being the most experienced and oldest driver on the grid, Alonso remains passionate about racing. The 2025 season marks 20 years since his first world title win, but so far, it hasn’t been smooth sailing for the veteran. Driving the underperforming AMR25, he has yet to score a single point this season. Yet, his drive and enthusiasm for the sport seem as strong as ever — though he’s realistic about the toll of the sport and his limits.

Looking ahead, Alonso revealed he is committed to racing through the 2025 and 2026 seasons, largely motivated by the upcoming rule changes in 2026, which he believes could transform the competitive landscape of the sport. “I wanted to race this year for sure, and next year for sure, because of the change in regulations,” he said. “But after 2026, I don’t know. I will go season by season.”

He added, “Right now, I am very motivated, but I can’t guarantee that motivation three or four years from now. I don’t want to make promises that could compromise the team’s progress, so we’ve decided to take it one year at a time until the end of 2026.”

Alonso’s approach is pragmatic and team-oriented. While many aging athletes push their careers as far as possible, Alonso is focused on ensuring that Aston Martin isn’t held back by any individual — including himself. The Spanish driver has expressed full support for the team’s long-term ambitions, especially in light of Aston Martin’s recent acquisition of legendary engineer Adrian Newey, who is expected to play a key role in developing a championship-caliber car.

Alonso indicated that even if he does decide to step away from racing, he remains committed to Aston Martin’s future in any capacity. “We can sit and talk honestly between all of us and check what is best for the team,” he explained. “I will always be in a position to help the team with whatever they need. If it’s behind the wheel, I will extend the contract if they think that way and I feel motivated.”

This transparency and team-first mindset are a reflection of Alonso’s maturity and understanding of the sport’s demands — not just on the body, but also on team dynamics and development. Unlike Hamilton, who remains open to an extended stint in F1, Alonso appears more grounded in his evaluation of what’s realistically sustainable.

His remarks also hint at a growing awareness of the physical and mental strain that comes with maintaining elite performance levels in Formula 1. With younger talents continually entering the sport, Alonso seems keen to make room for the next generation if and when the time is right.

For now, though, Fernando Alonso remains deeply invested in the present and near future. He’s all-in for 2025 and 2026, driven by a desire to help Aston Martin transition into a top-tier team under the new regulations. But beyond that, his future will depend on how he feels — not just as a driver, but as a contributor to a team with big aspirations.

In summary, while Hamilton keeps the door open for a prolonged F1 career, Alonso is setting clear and realistic boundaries. He’s focused on the current project, open to stepping aside when necessary, and intent on leaving the sport on his own terms — not merely clinging to a seat for nostalgia’s sake.
