When they do, those particles interact with gases in our atmosphere, creating the shimmering ribbons of green, pink, purple, and red we call the Northern Lights (aurora borealis) in the Northern Hemisphere
Why It Matters Now
This particular solar maximum has already proven more intense than initially forecasted. According to NOAA and NASA scientists, the Sun has produced stronger geomagnetic storms and more frequent CME events in the past few months. As a result, auroras have been visible in places as far south as Iowa, New York, and northern France — far beyond their usual Arctic territory.
With more of these solar events expected throughout 2025 and even into early 2026, the chances of seeing the aurora borealis from unusual locations are significantly higher. For many skywatchers, this is a once-in-a-decade opportunity.
What to Watch For
To catch the Northern Lights at their best, you’ll want to keep an eye on aurora forecasts — especially during times of predicted solar storms. Look for “KP index” values of 6 or higher, which usually means auroras could be visible farther south than usual.
