Free agency will soon be available. Teams will have the chance to talk to several players on the free market and bolster their lineups.
March 10 at noon EST marks the start of the legal tampering period. Teams and agents will have their first opportunity to start negotiating a deal at that point. Rumours are spreading as this draws near, and the Lions shouldn’t rely on the most recent information regarding CB Carlton Davis.
According to Jordan Schultz of FOX Sports, Davis will have a strong market and should sign a big contract.
“Carlton Davis of Detroit and D.J. Reed of the Jets will be among the top corners on the market, both attracting a lot of interest — and possibly commanding annual wages in the high teens,” he wrote. Both Davis and Reed are playing the best football of their careers, and lockdown corners are hard to find on the open market. They can help the run defence and aren’t scared to press in their similarly aggressive and effective style of play.
Lions Rumours: Carlton Davis Will Have Strong Market in Free Agency
The Lions have $51 million in cap space, so they will have the money to re-sign Davis, even though that is a possibility. The top options available are Byron Murphy Jr., Charvarius Ward, and Davis. Since the NFL is pass-happy, adding a reliable corner is always at the top of the list. Davis joined the Lions last March and provided them with a stable presence in the secondary, finishing with 56 total tackles, 11 pass deflections, and two interceptions in 13 games in 2024.
There will be a gap in the secondary if the Lions are unable to keep Davis. In the divisional round defeat against the Washington Commanders, Amik Robertson suffered a broken arm. Ennis Rakestraw Jr. and Terrion Arnold are entering their second seasons, but it helps to have that seasoned presence in the secondary.
Next week, the Lions will have to decide how to handle Davis in free agency.
