Since the sun is currently in the middle of its 11-year cycle, there will be more opportunities to observe the northern lights in the coming years due to an increase in solar flares.

You’ve probably seen friends post pictures of gorgeous skies on social media if you haven’t seen them in your own backyard.

In recent months, the aurora borealis, sometimes known as the northern lights, has been occurring almost every week.

A second wave of aurora borealis, visible to almost half of the United States, struck in October after lighting up the skies for almost a week in May. In 2024, the northern lights have become so prevalent for a reason, and NASA predicts that the pattern will persist well into 2025 and possibly 2026.

On October 15, the space agency held a teleconference to publicly proclaim that the sun was at the solar maximum, the pinnacle of its 11-year cycle, and to provide an update on what people can anticipate now that it has arrived.

Elsayed Talaat, director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Office of Space Weather Observations, stated, “We are currently in the period of the 11-year solar cycle known as solar maximum.”

“During this time, we expect to see more sunspots, and therefore there’s a higher chance of high-impact space weather occurring on any given day.”

To put it another way, NASA and NOAA anticipate that the sun will produce more sunspots and coronal mass ejections like those that have occurred this year, and possibly more like those that occurred in May and October, when the aurora borealis extended considerably farther than usual.

According to NASA, the sun has increased its activity annually since the start of this cycle, which is known as Solar Cycle 25.

NOAA and NASA predict that the solar maximum will remain longer than usual because Solar Cycle 25 is a smaller cycle, meaning that everyone will see more auroras for a considerable amount of time.

According to Lisa Upton, co-chair of the Solar Cycle 25 Prediction Panel, “Solar Cycle 25 is shaping up to be a relatively small cycle but slightly larger than Cycle 24.”

Accordingly, we should anticipate that the maximum phase will last for around three to four years. We anticipate another year or so of the maximum phase before we move into the decreasing phase, as we are already two years into the maximum period.

Anticipate more auroras and solar outbursts.

The sun’s 11-year cycle is the reason for all of this. The solar poles flip at the end of these cycles. You may get a broad notion of what’s happening to our nearest star right now by imagining what would happen if the North and South Poles flipped on Earth, which is something that might actually happen one day.

Solar flares and coronal mass ejections increase as a result of the transition, which makes the sun much more active.

Following their impact on Earth, those flares and ejections interact with the geomagnetic field of the planet to produce the breathtaking phenomenon known as the northern lights.

The northern lights are always present in the vicinity of the North Pole since the Earth receives some amount of solar energy every day.

Larger solar flares and ejections, on the other hand, have a greater impact on Earth, making the aurora borealis stronger and moving it farther from the North Pole so that people in other regions of the world may view it.

As a result, more incidences of the aurora borealis advancing southward will occur while the sun is still at its maximum.

It’s uncertain when the solar maximum will terminate or whether Earth will see another geomagnetic storm like those that occurred in May and October.

According to NASA and NOAA, calculations won’t be completed until months after the maximum has passed. For the next year or two, the northern lights could return on any day or at any moment, so prepare your phones accordingly.
