For the first time in a generation, the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees square off in the World Series, reigniting the original baseball rivalry.
With a resounding 10-5 victory against the New York Mets in Game 6 on Sunday, the Los Angeles Dodgers have returned to the World Series. This is their first visit to the Fall Classic since that contentious victory in 2020, and their fourth trip in eight seasons. The Dodgers are quite interested in removing that asterisk.
On the opposite side, waiting for them? The New York Yankees earned their ticket by defeating the Cleveland Guardians in five games. Game 1 looks to be a titanic battle and is scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m. ET. Since the Dodgers won the World Series in six games in 1981, these two have not faced each other in 43 years.
After Juan Soto’s three-run home run in the tenth inning sealed the victory in Game 5 of the ALCS, the Yankees enter the game on a high note. As a result, New York won 5-2 and made their 41st World Series appearance—the first in 15 long years. Giancarlo Stanton, who won the ALCS MVP award after hitting a two-run homer in that series, will be crucial as the Yankees try to win their 28th championship.
Two of baseball’s largest and wealthiest teams, with utterly unbearable fan bases, make this matchup a nightmare come true for many. The clamour, the bluster, and the never-ending argument over who is the best are all unavoidable. It’s terrible news for everyone outside of New York or Los Angeles that someone has to win.
For Yankee and Dodger supporters, however, this is the main focus.
