Beth Potter promises to give it her all in Saturday’s WTCS Grand Final matchup in Torremolinos in order to keep her global title.
The British athlete concluded an amazing journey 12 months ago in Pontevedra, where she won the World Championship after converting from track running to triathlon.
She would once again top the season rankings if the events of that day—Potter first and Cassandre Beaugrand third—were repeated.
Olympic champion Beaugrand is aware, though, that winning first place will give her a first-ever crown.
It’s all to play for, and despite a great season marked by several near-misses, Potter believes she’s in the form she needs to be.
“I refuse to give up.”
She finished second at WTCS Weihai, her most recent podium in an individual and relay race, and she was right in the thick of things in Paris, taking home two bronze medals. However, her last podium in an outdoor event was in Pontevedra.
She added, “I feel like I’ve been winning form all year, but I just haven’t quite managed to kind of tease it out, which is unfortunate,” in an interview with TRI247 this week.
However, I’m just going to concentrate on carrying out my own race strategy on Saturday; I’ll have faith in the system and I won’t give up for sure.
“Hopefully my running has been getting better in every race, I finally felt more like myself in Weihai – I’m not completely sure why but I’ve not been feeling it on the run this year so if I can build on Weihai then I think I’ll be in a really strong position,” she said.
She also acknowledges that, like many athletes, she has found the post-Olympic period to be exhausting and that she is eager for some time off to prepare for the next stage of her triathlon career.
She continued, saying, “A lot of it was just not knowing how I was going to feel after the Olympics. Up until July 31st, it was all I had scheduled.
After Paris, everything has been a bit of a blur, so before I make any arrangements, I just need some time off. I have also missed the constancy of my daily schedule, as I haven’t spent more than 10 days at home since June.
