Rick Welts has been named the new CEO of the Dallas Mavericks of the National Basketball Association (NBA).
Welts takes over for Cynthia Marshall, who, after almost seven years in the position, announced her retirement in October. Officially, Welts will start construction on January 1, 2025.
Welts has accumulated a great deal of experience in key leadership positions throughout the NBA before this.
He was most recently the Golden State Warriors’ president and chief operations officer. In addition to serving as the senior vice president, chief marketing officer, and president of NBA assets, Welts was also the president of the Phoenix Suns and the Phoenix Mercury of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA).
“The Dallas Mavericks have always had inspiring leadership since Cynt Marshall became the team’s CEO in 2018,” stated Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont.
“I’m incredibly proud that another outstanding leader will soon take over her successful legacy and our family’s vision for this franchise’s future.
Rick Welts is a member of the NBA Hall of Fame and one of the most successful executives in the league’s history.
“Having him join us as we continue to build the Mavericks’ successful history is a clear signal that this organisation is serious about both making the team one of the most popular sports teams in the world and growing its position as an elite NBA team.”
“The opportunity to lead this organisation in this city at this time is both extremely exciting and unexpected,” Welts continued.
