As the No. 5 team in the country and the No. 2 team in the SEC going into the postseason, the Texas Longhorns are on their way to the College Football Playoffs.
They finished the regular season with an 11-1 record and were on a five-game winning run going into the SEC Championship Game against the Georgia Bulldogs.
The Longhorns were pushed out of a first-round bye after losing to the Bulldogs in the conference title game, even though they appeared to be the favourite to be the top-ranked SEC team in the College Football Playoff.
The Longhorns received even more bad news a few days after losing 22-19 in Atlanta, Georgia, in the SEC title game.
Texas linebacker Derion Gullette intends to use the transfer site, according to a story published on Monday by college football insider Hayes Fawcett.
Following the announcement, Gullette posted a poignant statement to the Texas coaching staff and Longhorns supporters on social media.
“To Texas,” Gullete said. “First, I would like to express how thankful and grateful I am for the opportunity to play at the division 1 level. I couldn’t have done it without putting my trust in God and believing that he will always guide me in the right direction. I want to thank the coaching staff for teaching me and giving me a chance to reach my goals. I will forever be grateful! To my teammates, I love y’all boys and I will always remember the great times we had! With that being said, I will be entering the transfer portal with 3 years of eligibility.”
The Longhorns will get ready for the College Football Playoffs’ opening round matchup against the Clemson Tigers while Gullette looks for a new chance.
The game will take place in Austin, Texas, on December 21 at 4 p.m. ET.
On December 9, the first day of the official window, Gullette logged in with his name. College players will have access to the transfer site from December 9 and December 28.
The second window will run from April 16 to April 25, even if players are not able to access the transfer portal at the beginning of the year.
With the Longhorns, Gullette had a little chance to show off his skills. Due to his recovery from a high school knee injury, he missed the 2023 season.
Gullette played five games for the Longhorns in 2024 and finished his career with two tackles.
He was originally brought to Texas as a four-star prospect, according to 247Sports, who was listed as the nation’s 18th edge and 121st overall player.
With three years of eligibility left, Gullette will look for a new opportunity.
