In the Yankees’ rotation of pitchers, Luis Gil might be the solution.
This season, the Yankees experimented with a number of starting pitchers. Carlos Rodon and Gerrit Cole, the names that are underlined, were at the top of the rotation.
After recovering from his injury in late June, Cole regained his position as the Yankees’ top arm.
With an 8-5 record during the regular season, Cole kept his title as “ace.” Cole remained the most dependable pitcher due to his dominating physical performance, which demonstrated his 3.41 ERA in 95 innings.
Cole finished with a 2.17 ERA in five starts during the postseason, demonstrating his consistency. Conversely, Carlos Rodon was the complete opposite.
Luis Gil, the American League Rookie of the Year, is projected to be successful and productive in the rotation, so his regular season could push Rodon to the top after his dubious postseason performance.
In the 2025 postseason, Gil only got eight innings. In the American League Championship Series, he pitched four innings against the Cleveland Guardians. In the World Series, he also pitched four innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Gil was called upon in a few weak spots during the eight innings. He gave up six earned runs, eight hits, four strikeouts, and five walks while recording a 6.75 ERA. Gil pitched 146 pitches with 88 strikes, and batters batted a cumulative.267.
It was expected but not really spectacular. Gil made two pitches on October 18 and October 29, eleven days apart. Gil hadn’t pitched since September 28th before today. The right-hander was not ready to participate because of the time off and lapses in activity.
Gil’s consistent performance throughout the season leads one to assume that he is suited for the one-two punch.
Due to Gerrit Cole’s absence at the start of the season, Gil was able to establish himself as the fifth man. The right-hander had an average warm-up in April, but an extravagant one in May.
Gil has a flawless 6-0 win-loss record at the end of May. In 38 and 2/3 innings pitched, he recorded an amazing 0.75 ERA. Gil posted a 6.45 ERA in June after cooling off significantly over the following three months. Batters in June had a.253 batting average against Gil, compared to just.109 in May.
This sparked concern in the bullpen as the weeks passed. The worries didn’t last long because Gil showed that he could recover.
Gil had a successful appearance on July 13th, helping the team defeat the Baltimore Orioles.
