Those in Washington, Idaho, Montana, and other states may be able to view the aurora borealis.
On the evening of Wednesday, November 6, there’s a potential that the northern lights will be visible throughout the United States once more.
This would be one of the numerous opportunities this year for stargazers to witness the vivid hues.
According to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, magnetic storms caused by solar activity, such as solar flares or coronal mass ejections (CME), are what produce the Northern Lights, also known as the aurora borealis. Solar winds carry energetic charged particles from these magnetic storms away from the sun.
The particles smash with nitrogen and oxygen particles when they enter our atmosphere. Each atom emits a distinct colour as the air particles release the energy they had gained during the impact.
Despite the low possibility of the show on November 6, viewers may still be able to see the northern lights. This event was first forecast as a G1 geomagnetic storm (minor) by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Space Weather Prediction Centre (NOAA).
Since the CME is now only expected to touch the Earth’s magnetosphere, the aurora borealis could not be as bright and noticeable as it was in the past.
Those in Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Maine might be able to see the northern lights between 7 and 10 p.m. EST if they do appear.
Those who want to see the northern lights should monitor the 30-minute forecast and the NOAA aurora view line for updates, as space weather can change rapidly.
There will probably be more chances to see the northern lights in the near future if the display is weak because solar flares and CMEs might be more common until 2026.
