Sources: Celtic accelerate plan to sign defender in January

According to sources that spoke to Football Insider, Celtic is looking to strengthen its defense during the January transfer window.

Senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke stated on the most recent episode of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast that the Scottish champions will likely look to add a new defender in January, as 24-year-old Alexandro Bernabei is expected to depart the team.

The left-back, who paid £4 million to join Celtic in 2022, is now on loan at Internacional in Brazil but is scheduled to return to Glasgow in January after their season concludes.

After a disastrous 18 months in Scotland, it is understood that Brendan Rodgers has no interest in reintegrating Bernabei into the team and will try to get him off the field as quickly as possible.

In 28 games across all competitions, Bernabei has managed to regain some of his lost form in Brazil, tallying three goals and dishing out four assists.

During the summer transfer window, Celtic made significant additions to their defense by acquiring Alex Valle on loan from Barcelona and Auston Trusty from Sheffield United.
