Shortly before training camp began, the Nebraska football team received a resignation letter.
Evan Cooper, the coordinator of the passing game and defensive backs coach, announced his resignation on Friday night.
Cooper had just started his second season as the defensive backs coach for the Huskers. He would have been on Rhule’s staff for 12 years in a row during the 2024 campaign. For personal reasons, he resigned.
The Huskers’ greatest statistical defense since joining the Big Ten Conference in 2011 was largely attributed to Cooper’s secondary. Nebraska’s pass defense was tenth in the nation, limiting opponents just 6.1 yards per attempt.
In addition, the Huskers placed seventh nationally in running defense and fifteenth nationally in passing efficiency defense.
Nebraska achieved its highest rankings since 2009 and 2010 thanks to the Huskers’ secondary, which enabled the team rank 14th in total defense and 17th in scoring defense nationwide.
The secondary was responsible for 30 pass breakups and seven interceptions. Isaac Gifford, a defensive back, was the first Husker defensive back to record 85 tackles in a season since 2014, and he also led Nebraska in tackles with 86.
An assistant coach at Nebraska has left the school shortly before fall camp starts for the second straight season.
