Even though the Pistons arrived early, the Celtics’ early 3-point shooting proved dominant. They had a similar performance to the Knicks’ season-opening victory at the half, shooting 16 for 32 from outside the arc. It appeared as though the first two games of the season would be repeated as the C’s took a 23-point lead in the second quarter.
However, the Pistons resisted giving up easy. To reduce that margin and make it at least manageable before halftime, Detroit embarked on a run of 18–6 to conclude the first half. Then, halfway through the fourth quarter, the Pistons offense took the lead thanks to baskets in the paint and the fast break. However, the Celtics managed to secure the win by defending themselves.
With 37 points on 6-for-13 3-point shooting, Jayson Tatum took the lead. This was his second game this season with 35 points or more. Payton Pritchard did the majority of his damage in the first half, scoring 19 points off the bench. An additional 24 points and 10 rebounds were contributed by Jaylen Brown. Cade Cunningham scored 21 points and dished out 11 assists for the Pistons, while Jaden Ivey scored 26 points.
