Rodgers Defends £11m Man Arne Engels: “Not the Finished Article Yet”

Arne Engels, the club’s record-breaking acquisition, has been backed by Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers after the Belgian midfielder first drew criticism for his play since moving to Celtic Park

The 21-year-old joined the Hoops with high expectations, following an £11 million transfer that set a new club record. However, Rodgers has reminded critics that Engels is “nowhere near the finished article” and urged fans to give the young player time to develop.

Despite Celtic’s remarkable defensive tenacity against the Serie A team, Engels’ performance in the team’s arduous 0-0 Champions League tie with Atalanta drew criticism from certain supporters. However, Rodgers insists that the team has a guy with a lot of potential and stresses the importance of patience.

“You have to respect that there are critics in the game and that people have opinions,” Rodgers stated. In my opinion, we brought in a young player who is still far from the final product.I believe that occasionally there is a price associated with him, which could provide the impression that you are purchasing the finished product, even though he is not. It’s my responsibility and the staff’s to help him reach his full potential as a 20-year-old athlete.

“You will feel the pressure and expectations as he comes to play at a large club after only playing one game a week, which is a holiday in my opinion.
