With the intention of revitalising the party’s organisational framework and reviving member confidence, Ahmed Yayari Mohammed has formally taken on the role of Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In his inaugural speech to party members made accessible to the media on Sunday in Abuja, Mohammed acknowledged the critical need for reflection within the party while also expressing gratitude for the tremendous support he has received.
He underlined that the PDP’s ability to be a potent opposition force in Nigerian politics has been hampered by recent internal strife and a departure from basic principles.
“Unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that we have not effectively fulfilled the crucial role anticipated of a strong opposition in a democratic society,” Mohammed said, advocating for a reversion to the values of justice, equity, and fairness that formed the foundation of the party.
At a pivotal moment when the PDP is trying to revitalise its structure and rebuild confidence among its members, especially the youth, Mohammed’s appointment is the most recent development in the turmoil plaguing the main opposition.
The factional chairman vowed to uphold the party’s constitution to the letter and treat every member equally, regardless of their standing.
Mohammed revealed his intentions to call the eagerly anticipated National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting for October 24, 2024. He asked the North Central Zone to move quickly to submit its candidacy for consideration by the NEC, as it is entitled to do in lieu of previous National Chairman Iyorchia Ayu.
In order to promote a unified front going forward, Mohammed urged cooperation across party organisations, including as the PDP Governors’ Forum and the Board of Trustees.
He stated that the goals of his leadership are to preserve the PDP’s historical heritage while it is in power and to restore Nigerians’ faith in the party as a genuine option.
They established a group and named Mohammed as the acting national chairman after the party’s national publicity secretary, Debo Ologunagba, and national legal counsel were suspended last week.
