Judge Luke Bryan revealed some surprising information about Katy Perry’s goodbye party after the American Idol season 22 finale. Katy exited the reality singing competition series after seven years of judging alongside Luke and Lionel Richie. They made up the original judging panel when ABC revived American Idol in 2018 after its 2016 cancelation by FOX. This is the first time that the judging panel is experiencing a shakeup in the ABC era. In an interview with GMA, Luke shared that Katy’s goodbye party wasn’t what people expected. He explained, “Everybody thinks we’re gonna go out and stand on barstools and spray champagne over everybody, but we just had a chill dinner.” He added, “We got to toast Katy and we got to say some really amazing things to her, and it was really emotional and [there was] a lot of love in the room.” Luke concluded by saying that it was the “perfect way” to finish out the season and “certainly Katy’s tenure with us, and it was really special.”

When asked what Katy’s replacement needs to fit in and succeed on American Idol, Luke joked that the new judge must be able to “tolerate me and Lionel.” He laughed, “Whoever you are, just be on time.” Luke also offered some serious advice to Katy’s successor, saying, “Just have fun with it and don’t treat it like a job.” Luke, Lionel, and Katy certainly proved that they loved their roles. From their excitement at finding incredible singers during the auditions to their finale night performances with the contestants, they showed that they wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.
