In response to criticism of his live on-air criticism of Celtic captain Callum McGregor, Graeme Souness has released an apology.

The Rangers legend was a commentator for ITV Sport on Friday night when Scotland lost their opening Euro 2024 match 5-1.

Steve Clarke’s starting lineup for the game at the Allianz Arena in Munich included McGregor.

In his post-match speech, Souness seemed to place a large amount of the blame on McGregor, citing the 31-year-old in his analysis of Germany’s first two goals.

As he dissected the goal, the analyst referred to him as the “Celtic captain” rather than by name.

“Great turn again, Gundogan, slipping Havertz in, back to Musiala, wrong footing the Celtic captain yet again, that’s two in one move,” the speaker exclaimed.

“He tries to nick it here, Callum McGregor, and he gets back in, he tries to nick it again – just stay goalside and stop the effort on your goal.”

Social media users were displeased with this, and one fan called talkSPORT this morning to vent his annoyance at Souness’ remarks.

The former Scotland, Rangers, and Liverpool defender maintains that he was just unaware of McGregor’s name at the time.
